A peek at the life, times and thoughts of John during his two-year stint in Knoxville.
Almost there...
It is almost finals week and it's a fun feeling to see myself finishing up all those long-term assignments. I got a big taste a few weekends ago when I polished off Wayne Jackson's behemoth Acts commentary and was glad to finish off the reading assignments for our Conquest and Judges class.
I even remember how happy I was the night I finished James Meadows' Acts workbook. 63 pages of questions from the first eight chapters of Acts. You'd think I'd have all eight chapters memorized by now (I don't).
I finished my final sermon for Homiletics I Monday night and preached it Tuesday in class. I've been trying to get better at having my main points in my head. I got some of my best feedback for this sermon despite the fact that my heavy reliance on my memory caused me to skip two different subpoints and made the sermon shorter than it otherwise would have been. I can't remember the last time I preached a 14 minute sermon. Well, OK: Tuesday, March 15, 2008 I preached a 14 minute sermon. Prior to that you'd probably have to go back to 2000.
Support letters are typed. I just need to stuff the envelopes, put the stamps on them and get them in the mail. This should not take that long but it's amazing how difficult the smallest of tasks can be when you're running full steam ahead.
I've been reminded this quarter of how much I love to do research. I never really *like* writing papers, but yet when I finally spit it out and do the job I tend to find myself thinking "Wow, I really enjoyed that." It's time consuming, but there's something I enjoy about pulling up information from all over the place and trying to make sense of it. Research papers also come somewhat easier to me because I'm used to having to have somebody to quote for anything that is subjective. I blame journalism for that, but it makes it easy to dig for sources and to know when you need to have some kind of citation in your paper.
It is frightening that my library is outgrowing my bookcase. I can't say this was unexpected, but it still stuns me that I actually have so many books. I've never been a book guy, but looking at my shelves it's undeniable that they're there.
Baseball has started and I have barely had time to pay attention to it.
