Engineering Arrogance
I was watching some of the History Channel today (Cities of the Underworld was featuring Jerusalem, which means I had a little bit of interest) and after the show I was watching went off one about engineering disasters came on.
I didn't watch much of it, but you don't have to watch California landslides and sinkholes too long before you begin to realize that we take a *lot* about our world and safety for granted. I know engineering and construction has come leaps and bounds, but we are foolish to be so arrogant as to presume that we've got it all figured out now and any new building we build, road we construct or bridge we piece together is immune to failure.
I don't say that to scare anybody, just to remind us all that we take some things for granted and think more highly of our intelligence than perhaps we should.
