Super Bowl Preview
Tonight is the NFL's biggest game. I've paid only casual attention to the league this year and that's why I'm completely qualified to run my mouth about the Super Bowl.

The Patriots beat the San Diego Chargers to remain undefeated and hit the Super Bowl. Following the game via ESPN.com I was actually impressed that the Chargers could get down the field but never punch it in. "New England's defense must be all right" I thought. Maybe. But considering that LaDainian Tomlinson wasn't in the game and Phillip (is it one L or two? I'm too lazy to spell check) Rivers wasn't at full steam. So, the fact that the AFC Championship game was still close suggests that maybe the win wasn't as impressive as it appeared.

The Giants beat the Green Bay Packers. I was hopeful that Green Bay would win so Brett Favre would have the chance to win a Super Bowl and retire on top. The Packers defense seemed decent, too. New York was good in their last showdown with the Patriots. They had New England on the ropes but couldn't quite finish the job.

That means that we know New York can hang around. New England was playing for plenty the last time they met, an unbeaten regular season not known since the Miami Dolphins and their 14-0 season in the '70s. Both teams will be playing for plenty this time too, and the advantage has to go to New England. Especially if Randy Moss gets loose a few times. He cooked the Giants secondary for a few touchdowns last time out, and is a threat any time he's on the field.

Several years ago a Super Bowl was about to go down that involved the Patriots and the St. Louis Rams. The Rams were the trendy pick. They were the dominant team. And despite how badly I thought the Rams would win I picked the Patriots. It didn't make sense, it was just a hunch. Not only was I right in my pick, I missed the actual score by 1 measly point. I had a 21-17 pick (if I remember correctly) and the Patriots won 20-17. This year is one of those years where a bold "All signs are pointing to New England so I'll go with the other team" pick, but I don't have that gut instinct.

I would love to see the Giants, my favorite team in younger days until they got Kurt Warner and Eli Manning in the same season and thoroughly disgusted me, pull off the victory and spoil the perfect season. I just don't see it happening. New England seems poised to go down in history. I hope New York plays spoiler, I just doubt that they do.

New England Patriots 41
New York Giants 28

MVP: Eli Manning and his 3 INTs. One returned for New England's go-ahead score.
