The NCAA Tournament is underway. Yes, I admit, it has usurped bowl season as my favorite time of the year.
I took some notes yesterday while watching the tournament, apart from the time I spent trying to work on homework while games played on the TV. I'll add a few others that are still in my head.
-The NCAA Tournament kicked off with a West Region game. In harmony with the location of the region, this game was played in Washington, D.C.
-There is a fantastic phone commercial with a guy shooting pool. Notice not only his wicked air guitar skills (OK, pool cue guitar skills) but how horrible he is at pool. Good thing he's playing alone.
-Volkswagen has an amusing commercial where a man stands on the floor above and keeps activating the car's alarm when two preppy rich folk try to inch closer for a look. "If you like I can put a Sold sign on it," a salesman says. "No." the man replies, keys in hand so he can push the alarm button again and again. "This is fine." (paraphrased).
-The Planter's commercial has got to go. No amount of rubbing cashews on yourself will help your appeal. The entire advertisement is stupid.
-Kent State put up 10 points in the first half of their game. That means in 20 minutes they made five baskets. It was enough to tie a tournament record for fewest points in a half and also enough to keep Kent State from winning the game as I had predicted. They played much better in the second half, but it was way too late.
-My most devastating miss of the first round is USC's loss to Kansas State. I had USC as a dark horse to the Final Four. Obviously that won't be happening now.
-I could be wrong, but I really don't think Applebees, or any restaurant, should describe any of their food as being "killer apps." While it might appeal to the computer saavy, it won't appeal to the "This food could be lethal!" audience. Suddenly I'm less inclined to order an appetizer from Applebees.
-West Virginia played well and beat Arizona. As a reward, they get to play Duke. Duke survived a huge scare from Belmont. Parity in basketball is still alive and well.
-Mississippi Valley State, the Delta Devils, had the honor of getting whalloped by UCLA. When SportsCenter told me they had suffered a 71-26 setback earlier in the year I knew all I needed to know. It doesn't matter who you lose to, if you lose 71-26 during the season odds are you are no risk to beat a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
This is the first year that I did not fill out multiple brackets to enter into all the fun, free pools I usually participate in. I am sticking to one and with the exception of USC I'm doing well. There were 16 games played yesterday and I picked 13 correctly.
